From CIGI’09: ”Every autumn, The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) hosts its annual conference. This landmark event brings together accomplished researchers, policy makers, business leaders and journalists to define and debate issues of critical global importance and to identify innovative practices that can assist in meeting global challenges.
CIGI ’09 will address the systemic impacts of the global economic crisis and the long-term prospects for international economic governance. This year’s event will be hosted at CIGI’s headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario on October 2-4, 2009, and will feature a keynote address by the 2008 Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, Dr. Paul Krugman.”
I saw that the registration fee was $750 CAD. Ouch! Oh sure, you get to hear from several internationally distinguished speakers including Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman, and rub elbows with local movers and shakers. But what about the 8.7% unemployed Canadians or 9.8% unemployed Americans? Is such a conference at the top of their to-do list? Yet, the inclusion of some of them and the far greater number not even included in the cooked statistics is imperative for moving towards a global new deal. At least, one that is truly progressive and inclusive.
