From their About page:
“The Ludwig von Mises Institute was founded in 1982 as the research and educational center of classical liberalism, libertarian political theory, and the Austrian School of economics.“
“It is the mission of the Mises Institute to place human choice at the center of economic theory, to encourage a revival of critical historical research, and to advance the Misesian tradition of thought through the defense of the market economy, private property, sound money, and peaceful international relations, while opposing government intervention as economically and socially destructive.“
However, from their Donate page:
“The Mises Institute is a 501(c)(3) so contributions are deductible to the full extent the law allows. Ludwig von Mises Institute for Austrian Economics, Tax ID 52-1263436“
They hate government so much, they’re a government-sanctioned and regulated tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
Now their justification, I’m sure, is that they’re serving the best interests of the Austrian School of economics by facilitating a way for the Institute and its supporters to remove as much from the government’s tax base as their operations and donors can afford.
However, a legal requirement of their tax-exempt status is compliance with regular reporting requirements and regulations of the Internal Revenue Service, the government agency whose forerunner was formed in 1862 during the Civil War administration of President Abraham Lincoln, which senior Mises fellow, Thomas DiLorenzo, aggressively attacks in his articles, and has aggressively attacked in his books, The Real Lincoln and Lincoln Unmasked.

This entire argument is a joke. (LvMI using 501c status to save on their earnings.)
It’s tantamount to saying that because I use as many write-offs as possible makess me a statist.
“Makes”not “makess”
Droid typo.
It’s not an appropriate analogy, since it’s not a legal requirement to obtain 501(3)(c) status, whereas it is a ‘legal’ requirement to pay your personal income taxes.
You don’t see any inconsistency with Lew Rockwell claiming as recently as last month that government is worse than the mafia, so he decided to enter into a voluntary agreement with it?

[...] Should Libertarians Accept Social Security? Laurence Vance on why Ron Paul is right. – Predictably argues that libertarians should accept a government benefit. While I agree with taking back exactly what you’ve paid into the system, I find it ironic that those who purport to hate government so much conveniently find ways to recognize the authority of an unlawful government, and to accept benefits from it, such as I documented with the tax-exempt status of the Mises Institute. “Friedrich Hayek had been his tutor at the London School of Economics in the 1930s”.
I suppose you think Hayek was a rich man and could afford to pick and choose his work preferences, after of course having to flee Austria before the grasp of Nazi Germany hit Austria, and that this little detail makes him some sort of evil insider to Rockefeller.
This is the sort of backward fallacy in argument that simply distracts from real study. It is sort of analogous to saying that every American who has a Social Security Number is a practicing socialist and cannot be trusted in their insights.
People act according to the environment and surrounding culture and customs. If we all simply disregard the law, regardless of how opposite they are to our beliefs and ideas, we relegate ourselves to destitution and possibly incarceration and therefore useless in any attempt to prosper. Or for that fact to bring a much needed educational system to people very much short of one and suffering the effects of this shortage.
I am not condoning the Ludwig von Mises Institute for being a 501c3 “non-profit”, as I have had similar questions about any such status, I will only applaud their financial resilience in remaining an institute of economic learning despite the attacks of today’s intellectuals and of course not to mention government manipulation and brainwashing. They are smart enough to use the system, regardless of any emotional manifestation in disdain of it, to their financial advantage. Americans would be all the wiser to follow suit and take care of matters before they get worse, economically speaking.
Of, if someone works feverishly for profit, does this make them so evil? The institute does what it needs to survive an onslaught of government intervention and regulation and if it did not it would wind up like so many other websites which are obviously underfunded or broke, unable to dedicate the time, energy, and effort to their endeavors, slaves to bare necessity like so many today.
You’re not suggesting that if there were a real free market and no government intervention and no 501c3 corporations that the LvMI would not exist do you? Is this what you are suggesting in concert with your erroneous claim of LvMI being contradictory in their convictions?
Your words:
“Now their justification, I’m sure, is that they’re serving the best interests of the Austrian School of economics by facilitating a way for the Institute and its supporters to remove as much from the government’s tax base as their operations and donors can afford.

I am completely against the Social Security System as well as the Federal Reserve System and all other forms of socialism in American policy all of which burgeon from the 14th amendment political status system of so-called U.S. CITIZENRY. Does this construe me as an accomplice of these systems by my using federal reserve notes, carrying a SSN and still carrying the status of U.S. Citizenship?
I no longer am a registered voter, so at least I no longer consent to this system in THAT manner. But what are my options to what I mention above if I am considered an accomplice through consent?
You’re obviously all liberal toadies, sorry we call them ‘progressives’ in modern day America. The Mises Institute is as much and more so anti-corporate Welfare as it is anti social Welfare but you must have skipped those articles. As a “think tank” it is exempt from certain taxes but not more so than liberal or conservative think tanks. Sure their ideology does jive with the current government and so they play by the rules of that government, what part of that do think is contradictory?… Oh that’s right, public education has confused you to the point that you think Libertarianism is the same as Anarchy, common mistake but if you were willing to read a book from time to time you’d realize that wasn’t the case. Thank you, and [Ed: expletive deleted] you very much
I think the Mises ideology jives with the banking industry’s – create a bunch of non-solutions to distract from monetary policy reform. And have money thrown at you at the same time.
That’s why the big businesses support Ron Paul right? Even though they don’t.
The Mises argument is the one that would most hamstring the banking industry, and it’s biggest target is the banking cartel that is the Federal Reserve system. How it “jives” with the banking industry is beyond me.
Peter Thiel of Paypal and Facebook donated millions to Ron Paul’s Political Action Committee.
Government-issued interest-free money is the proposal that would most hamstring the banksters.
Sure, the Money Power prefers a global system of debt and interest-based private central banking. The main purpose of the Austrian School, in my view, is to neutralize real opposition to the Money Power.
[...] For my critical analysis of the Mises Institute, see how they hate monetary inflation so much, they owned $4 million in U.S. Treasury Bonds in 2007, and how they hate government so much, they’re a government-sanctioned and regulated tax-exempt organization. [...]
Just as I predicted, a prominent Mises devotee says receiving government funding is justified, since the money is already being handed out.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/block/block175.html
This, from Walter Block, one of the minority of Mises devotees who vehemently supports the legality of voluntary slave contracts, enforced by the very government that fellow Mises devotee Gary North says lies, cheats and steals, and Murray Rothbard called, “a gang of thieves writ large.”
Mises – propaganda arm of the Power Elite “bankers” and their Fed/IRS.
It certainly does serve their interests, whether or not they actively fund it.
And here’s some evidence of that, from the Austrian School economist Hans F. Sennholz, published on LewRockwell.com on February 28, 2007, saying Ludwig von Mises was funded in part by “generous grants by the Rockefeller Foundation.”
http://www.lewrockwell.com/sennholz/sennholz17.html
“Professor Mises had arrived in New York from Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal on August 2, 1940. He immediately resumed his educational efforts by writing two relevant books which Yale University Press readily published. Omnipotent Government appeared in May 1944, a second printing in February 1945 and a third in May 1945. Bureaucracy was first published in September 1944, a second printing in October 1944, and the third in January 1946. Generous grants by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Bureau of Economic Research supported him in his study and writing.”
Here’s another Austrian School economics and Rockefeller connection.

“Finally, in his most surprising statement, he revealed he considers himself a follower of the Austrian school of economics. Friedrich Hayek had been his tutor at the London School of Economics in the 1930s.”
