Everyone wants power and waste disposal, yet when it comes to where the power sources and garbage dumps are to be located to meet that demand, most people don’t want them near their own backyard.

It gets a little too obvious when truly green energy projects like windmills are challenged by NIMBYers. Instead of being honest that they don’t want them near their homes because they’ll reduce their property value, be an eyesore, and other honest reasons, they often say they pose some sort of hazard.

It really is laughable to me to fixate on opposing windmills on the basis of posing a health hazard — in this case, 550 metres away from homes, when, for example, within several blocks of where I live, there are two high-power transmission towers that sit less than 50 metres away from some homes.

I think Mr. Hanna needs to take a broader view of the health effects posed by all power sources near homes if he expects to be taken seriously by most people who are genuinely concerned about health effects, and not just their own property value and aesthetics.
